For the first time in Korea, 'Shield TBM method' was applied to this 'Wangsipri-Seonreung double tracked railway project' digging a tunnel at the bottom of Han River. The soundings of the third section are up to 20m, and the tunnel length is 846m. 'Shield TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine) method' was designed by Mr. Mark Brunel from England, in 1818, and since it was applied to the riverbed tunnel at River Thames in London for the first time, it has been regarded as the safest and most economical engineering method in the world. The broad railroad Bundang double tracked railway project is a construction project to extend the existing Seonreung-Bojeong Bundang line to Wangsipri, which means to construct the 6.8km long rails. This is expected to be completed by 2010.

Korea Railroad Research Institute(KRRI) was founded in March 1996 financed by the Korean government. The nation's sole railway research body is committed to improving the overall railway systems built upon nationwide rail networks in order to maintain competitiveness in the global market. The experts group serves the purpose in an optimal manner by teaming up with academia, industry and government.
KRRI has come a long way since its inception to develop highly advanced rail technology in the nation for the passenger. Specifically, the railway research body is currently involved with several national projects among which are Korean high speed rail, Urban light rail transit, K-AGT and standardization and tilting transit system, Tilting Train Express for speed up on conventional lines. Central Track .Engineering Office is providing each railway construction sites around the country with track materials and equipment necessary for the domestic railway construction, and is the only entity that is equipped with welding plant facility able to produce Continuous Welded Rail for high-speed railway, which requires the best quality.
Tilting train systems - the design of hybrid carbody with maximum speed 200km/h, and vehicle equipment, the insurance of the manufacturing skills and the suggestion the prototype system
Korea plans to launch full-fledged 'tilting' train services by 2010, which will allow faster domestic rail speeds to be reached. A tilting train utilizes a mechanism that enables rolling stock to better negotiate curved parts of regular railroad tracks. Normal trains must reduce speed to keep from derailing, but a tilting train can maintain its speed, thereby improving travel time for passengers and freight. |
